When: September 20–21, 2011
Where: UMSL, J.C. Penney Bldg., Room 126

Over the course of her working life, a woman will earn roughly $1 million less than a man – simply because she is a woman.

$tart$mart and Work$mart are two programs developed by Wage Project, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the reduction or end of the gender wage gap. A woman in the workforce may lose $1.2 million over the course of her life (with consequences following her into retirement) if she does not take action to ensure that she is getting what is owed her, a comparable wage/salary.

These programs provide participants with information about how to determine comparable salaries in their field and geographic area, and further provides them with negotiating skills and an opportunity to negotiate a comparable wage/salary through a highly engaging role-playing exercise. Because research has shown that women don't negotiate salaries when hired, and don't ask for raises and promotions, the negotiation piece of these workshops is essential.
