State Farm Claim Management and Agency Representatives address specific issues related to diversity in corporate America:

  • Understand the culture/environment and learn what is acceptable and welcomed.
  • Watch-Look-and-See for biases of racism, homophobia, religion, disability and others and learn how to respond.
  • Realize what language (verbal and non-verbal) you are speaking.
  • Learn how to reduce communication barriers by understanding cross-cultural communication.
  • Gain knowledge about the three types of mentors:  those who give information, those who advocate, and those who provide emotional and social support.  Hear how important it is to permit your mentor/advocate to be constructively honest with giving you feedback about critical issues such as wardrobe, grammar, work ethic, etc.
  • Receive tips on minding your manners, including practical and business etiquette.
  • Gain insight on the definition of professional dress and business casual dress.
  • Understand both the written and unwritten/unspoken rules in the workplace.
  • Discover what a successful State Farm interview looks like.

Light refreshments will be served, and attendees have the opportunity to participate in on-campus practice interviews with State Farm executives the week following the program.

Co-sponsored by Career Services, Multicultural Relations, Executive Leadership Consortium & UPB. Faculty can give credit for student participation.
