Transition to Teaching Program Designed for those holding a bachelor’s degree to transition to the career of teaching. Many rural and urban schools in Missouri face a shortage of special education teachers and secondary school teachers in areas such as math, science, music, art and foreign language. If you have a BA or BS degree and are considering a rewarding career as an educator, why not start teaching now, while you pursue your certification?
UM-St. Louis has been a University Partner with Teach for America since 2006. Teach for America has a mission “to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation's most promising future leaders in the effort.” TFA recruits outstanding recent college graduates from all backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. Last year, over 25,000 individuals applied to join Teach for America. Approximately 100 TFA corp. members and placed in the St. Louis region each year. As the University Partner, UM-St. Louis provides corp. members with the necessary coursework for them to earn their teaching certification in the two year period. Most corp. members complete additional coursework and earn their Masters degree in education. Individuals interested in learning more about Teach for America should visit their website at http://www.teachforamerica.org. Teach for America coordinates all of the recruitment activities. Programs for teachers and administrators in K–12 educational administration; adult and continuing education; higher education administration; and community education.
