Continuing Education - Gateway Writing Project

About the Gateway Writing Project

PDFPrintE-mail

Since 1978, the Gateway Writing Project has sponsored summer institutes, school-based inservice programs, classroom action-research teams, and a variety of credit workshops for teachers and administrators.

One of the Project's emphases has been using the computer as a tool in writing process instruction. GWP has helped many districts design computer-equipped writing centers, develop writing programs using technology, and prepare teachers to work effectively with new writing tools.

GWP workshops are not one-shot performances. GWP works closely with districts to plan a cohesive series of session (15 to 45 hours) tailored to the needs of the attending teachers. Threads of writing process instruction are woven together with three beliefs:

  • The need for teachers to write themselves
  • The necessity of time, feedback, and ownership for young writers
  • The importance of culturally sensitive teaching
