This class will consider how urban and regional planning begins and works at the neighborhood level. Using local and national examples, students will consider the elements and policies necessary for successful community development and planning including strategic planning practices, census and other data, approaches to zoning, community policing, community education, affordable housing and neighborhood economic development. The course will include an in-depth case study for a local neighborhood, consideration of best practices and a report to be presented to the community at the course's conclusion. Class time will be comprised of campus meetings, field charettes and online discussions.
